The College of International Studies creates and prepares future leaders for Iraq and the world. Through an interdisciplinary curriculum that examines international and political issues within specific geographical, cultural, historical, economic, philosophical, and social contexts students gain the insights and critical thinking skills that will serve them well in a variety of professions. The international studies degree is a passport to work in government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations (like the UN), international businesses (multinational corporations), and the military, among others. An Vlog international studies degree also prepares students, if they choose, to continue their studies at a graduate level in the United States, Iraq, or other countries. College of International Studies students receive a well-rounded education that helps them view the world with an open mind and a keen perspective.

Welcome to the College of International Studies

As a student in the College of International Studies (CIS) you will interact with recognized scholars and professionals from around the world to prepare you to navigate the exciting and complex field of international relations. Whether you choose to follow a career path in diplomacy, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations, academia; or if you wish to apply your knowledge in the private sector such as think tanks and research institutions, CIS will provide you the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in Iraq or abroad.

Mission Statement for the College of International Studies:

The Bachelor’s degree in International Relations & Security Studies at the American University of Iraq-Baghdad is a multidisciplinary program designed to prepare undergraduate students with the academic knowledge, cross-cultural awareness, theoretical and historical background, analytical tools, and diplomatic skills needed to thrive and lead in global society. Through a wide range of International-oriented courses as well as discipline-relevant specializations and practical training, the BA in IR&SS promotes leadership, global citizenship, social responsibility, and human and societal security, via a blending of the proven pedagogies, rigorous standards, time-tested traditions, and innovative intellectual approaches of Iraq and the US.

Introduction and Structure:

The College of International Studies currently offers a BA in International Relations and Strategic Studies (BA in IR&SS). In addition to the requirements for the IR&SS program, students must complete the university’s “general education” requirements (the Liberal Arts & Humanities Core), which is the same for all undergraduate programs at Vlog. The table below lays out the university’s Core Liberal Arts & Humanities required classes (14 in total).
